“Could make a boy dizzy” (Clugston, My Papa’s Waltz, para. 1) was the next line that captivated the strength of the smell of whiskey the boy was experiencing. This line makes readers sense the over indulgence the father had of whiskey (Fong, 1990). Roethke wrote, “the hand that held my wrist” (Clugston, My Papa’s Waltz, para. 3) and I remembered my grandfather holding my hand as we walked across the yard to the barn.

I recently headed out to the supermarket; check the labels on about 15 to 20 products. All the products contained some sort of corn sweetener ingredient. Corn is being fed to livestock: dairy cows, pigs, chicken and even salmon at all farms nationwide. Corn is cheaper, and less of a hassle to retrieve animals from the fields. All the available, soft drinks and juices for kids contain corn byproducts.
Me and my son, who was 12 years old worked on the rice paddies, growing rice. I was the only member of my family who used earn money along with my son. My village had about 700 people living it, most of them grew rice. My house was made from red bricks with a thatch- covered roof. Soon after dawn on Saturday, 16 March 1968, me and my son went to the rice paddy to see how the rice was growing, there was still about one month before the harvesting season began.
What is even more disturbing is the popularity of the drugs which aren’t promoted through the media. Again, Luis and I agreed on another point: narcotics such as marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, and heroin aren’t advertised at all, yet everyone knows what they are. By taking this drug, the population can feel better and create a positive feeling to the ruling power that supply’s their happiness. The government holds control over the apathetic and one-minded population. Stability was practically assured within the population (Huxley, 38).
However, it was very successful socially. The intentions of Prohibition were not to make alcohol consumption illegal. After all, the consumption of alcohol itself was still very much legal. Prohibition was a success socially because it was able to lower alcohol consumption which in return helped reduce many of the country’s social problems. This law, a government “experiment” with very little ways of enforcement, succeeded in cutting down the consumption of this very popular drug by one-third.
Brian Cunningham 1/20/11 English 100 Comparison Essay - Final Draft “You can agree with me, or you can be wrong.” Pretty good way to describe America. We all know what it is to be an American. Think very stereotypically for a second about an average American, a white male with a flag in his yard, his white picket fence, and the family he provides for. He grew up with the typical American upbringing, parents who spoke English, Mom would bake apple pie in the kitchen while father and son watched football. Through the course of his childhood from a combination of friends, family, and school he picked up the typical American way of thinking “my way or the highway”.
