Introduction This essay deals with Harold Macmillan`s visit to the USSR in February – March 1959. It is the purpose of the essay to reveal the meaning of the journey for the Prime Minister and for the country as a whole and answer the question whether the visit was a defeat. 2. Political Setting After World War II the international situation in the world became aggravated due to the ideological clash between two superpowers – the United States of America (USA) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Each of them was trying to prevent the other to expand its influence and thus, a certain social-political order to new countries. One of the places where interests of the two worlds became intersected was Germany. After the war the allies in anti-Hitler coalition divided the country into two parts. West Germany, or the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) opted for a democratic socio-political model and was consequently supported by the USA, Britain and France. East Germany, or the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) became controlled by the Soviet Union and thus, took a political course of `building Socialism` (Khrushchev N. 452).
