Wal-Mart’s Destructive Force

There are many people who shop at Wal-Mart because of their low prices and the convenience they provide. Most people do not realize the negative impact on American society from shopping at Wal-Mart. They use their popularity to influence situations which have a negative effect on the United States. For example, shopping at Wal-Mart promotes bad business tactics, which can cause American factories to shut down, hurt the working-class, and cause national economic consequences. The First reason people should not shop at Wal-Mart is because it helps promote bad business tactics, which can cause American factories to shut down. To explain, numerous manufacturing companies like the vacuum company Hoover, employs a high number of Americans. Wal-Mart uses a bullying tactic to force these manufacturers to sell their items at prices that Wal-Mart sets (Goldman, & Cleeland, 2003). Hoover is just one of many companies that are affected by the tactics used by Wal-Mart (Freeman, 2003). Most manufacturers are not able to accommodate these prices. When the factories do not meet Wal-Mart’s demands, it can be harmful to the factories and also the stores that sell their products. Once this happens, neither the factories, nor other stores are able to compete with Wal-Mart’s prices. Unable to compete, factories either shut down or like Hoover, relocate to other countries (Freeman, 2003). This means thousands of American jobs are lost (Goldman, & Cleeland, 2003). Then, Wal-Mart and other stores look to other countries for their products which are cheaper and of lower quality. Another reason shoppers should avoid Wal-Mart is because it hurts the American working-class. Once factories have closed or moved to foreign countries, the working-class lose their jobs here in America. After, they lose their jobs, they search for jobs elsewhere. Commonly, the jobs they do find pay a great deal
