I am applying for the W. C. Patton Humanitarian Scholarship because it will allow me to continue my education by pursuing a double degree in Music Performance and Computer Science. I have been accepted to such colleges and universities as University of Dayton, Brown University, University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music, Oberlin College and Oberlin Conservatory of Music and The University of Alabama. After completing my undergraduate studies, I plan to continue my education by attending Graduate School and receiving the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in woodwind performance. W.C. Patton dedicated his life to registering African Americans to vote. Mr. Patton is responsible for over one-and –a-half million individuals registering to vote. In my opinion, a leader is someone constantly searching for ways to serve others and not himself. As I consider the legacy of W.C. Patton, his life exemplified one of courage, leadership and humanitarianism. Because of W.C. I have been inspired to do this by the late founder and director of the Birmingham Youth Jazz Ensemble (BYJE), Jothan Callins, and my saxophone instructor, Dwight Houston. I want to follow in their footsteps and organize music clinics of my own and/or teach in established clinics. I plan to place an emphasis on combining music and technology to offer students options other than performance. I also want to invite other professional musicians I know to participate. By doing this, I believe the amount of opportunities for young musicians in Alabama will increase. I am certain that these activities will help motivate other aspiring musicians in Alabama, since it was activities such as these that helped inspire
