Vulnerable Population in the Workplace Project NUR/440 August 1, 2011 Vulnerable Population in the Workplace Project A growing vulnerable population that is seen more in home health and at younger ages is obesity. The obese population is cared for in home health for severe pressure ulcers on bony prominences and abdomen because of the obesity, heart conditions, respiratory problems, diabetes, and gastric issues. “Obesity exerts an enormous health impact through its effect on coronary heart disease and its risk factors” (Dreiling, 2011, p.1). According to Dr. Koh of the Department of Health “one third of U.S. adults 20 years of age or older are now obese” (Koh, 2010, p.1). The problem facing this population is the obesity and the core problem is not addressed. The symptoms are treated without addressing the obesity. “The increasing prevalence of obesity and its significant health consequences are straining our health-care system. In 2000, the total cost of obesity in the United States was an estimated $117 billion—$61 billion in direct costs and $56 billion in indirect costs” (Lee, 2010, p. 597). Some states have addressed these issues by starting with children and forcing schools to offer healthier lunches. A few states have tried rewarding people with healthier habits and penalizing ones with poor behaviors by giving the healthier people tax breaks. A few states offer exercise or dietician services. There are no studies if any of these programs are effective. Obesity Program A program in home health agencies can be implemented as part of the admission process.
