Vietnamese New Year Vietnamese New Year, or Tet for short , is considered the biggest and the most important festival in Vietnam. Began on the first day of the first month in Lunar Calendar, Tet is the longest holiday and includes three periods, known as Tất Niên (Before New Year's Eve), Giao Thừa (New Year's Eve), and Tân Niên (the New Year). Tet is the occasion for Vietnamese to exprsee their respect for their ancestors as well as welcoming the new year with hopes and happiness. Before New Year's Eve, the general atmosphere leading up to Tết covers in everywhere. Vietnamese spend a few days cleaning their homes and decorating the house with spring flowers, cooking traditional Tết food and waiting for relatives to return home. The ancestral altar is particularly take care of, with displayed five kinds of fruits. Also, parents buy new clothes for their children so that the children can wear them when Tết arrives.
