The design principle appears to be inviting. The piece is designed so that visitors can come close and touch the wall and the names engraved in the stone. In 1982, the United States was still feeling the effects of the Vietnam War. The soldiers who fought in Vietnam were treated horribly upon their return. Instead of being treated as returning heroes, they were hated and spat on.
Many of the veterans felt like they were being responsible for the war instead of the government. They also came back home with disorders and effects of war that went beyond what had been suffered by veterans in before wars. The veterans did not have an official welcome home celebration when they first arrived back to Australia. Their
If not killed during the war, many believe any Vietnam veteran would return home great and proud. But this is not the case. Many Vietnam veterans have committed suicide before, during, and after the war. Not only have these men and woman risked their lives for our country, but now, return different people and can not comprehend whether or not to continue their lives. Many people believe we win wars, when in actuality, no one does, especially those who serve in the armed forces (Suicide Wall, 11-10-2000).
Some families acted as if the vet only had been stationed at any other base. It was as if the families were apathetic to the subject (Maberry, and Hunt, n.d.). Many of the vets returning from the fighting came back with issues. Some of the issues experienced were drug use, mental issues, which is now called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), physically disabled, or suffered from the poisoning of Agent Orange. Our country was not prepared for the multitude of issues that Vietnam would cause in the men.
Conditions of worth depend on the model, unconditional positive regard of empathy, congruence and self-actualization. In person-centered theory is viewed as a humanistic approach in which the client is led to express their experiences of their life (Rodgers, 1957-1959). Person-centered approach to counselling attributes to the core conditions, empathy, congruence, (genesis) and self-actualization. The experience for the client should be a positive one, they need to feel like they are being listened to and understood. It is important to engage in the client’s world so they are able to express their feelings.
A war story is never something that someone should take to heart as absolute truth when heard for the first time since the truth is usually something that deserves to stay hidden from the general populace. In The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien goes through this process of determining how to tell a true war story after the death of a fellow soldier named, Carl Lemon. However, O’Brien’s narrative seems to suggest that the story itself does not contain many truthful aspects as well. O’Brien actually seems to indicate a few stories, such as that of the baby buffalo that are questionable based on the way they are told and thus begins to contemplate between what is truth, what is fiction, and what constitutes the truth. This way of storytelling shows that O’Brien is trying to say that a true story is usually unbelievable and that certain other aspects must either be added in, taken out, or changed in order to make the story more believable.

By Sameer Patel Historians believe that there were many reasons why the USA lost the war in Vietnam, ranging from domestic pressures to weak military tactics, and even perhaps failing to interpret the tenacity of their opponents. However, a few of those of involved in the war still fail to accept defeat, and are adamant that the USA were victorious. They firmly believed that they had not lost, but instead, they had blamed the fact that they were forced to withdraw due the lack of Congressional support back home. The fact that the USA had hardly lost any wars that they had engaged in prior to this one was an accomplishment that they were more than proud of, and due to a vast range of reasons, they had failed to continue and carry on with the good form.
During the Korean and Vietnam Wars, unlike the wars of past, there were no front lines. Conventional tactics should have been thrown out the window. Enemy forces in both wars fought a guerrilla war with guerrilla tactics. This was something American forces were not trained to fight and it showed. Americans used methods designed to beat another army in set-piece battles.
I went into combat as a naïve 20 year old and came out of combat a little damaged. Talking about my demons as I referred to my triggers earlier really is not something that comes easily to me. As a soldier I was taught to shut off my emotions and do what was needed to be done to accomplish the mission, little did I know when I took that advice to heart it would still be with me to this day. I have dealt with the ignorance of people far too long to really discuss openly what I went through. I have seen the damages of war and to this day those damages replay in my mind.
They feel as though that the only other people in the world who can understand them are other war veterans. Brett, Jake, Krebs,and the Narrator from "In Another Country" cannot fit back into society. Due to the scars they have received from the war they no longer fit into their spot of the puzzle because their puzzle piece had been reshaped and re colored. As a result they started from scratch creating a new picture of society in which their puzzle pieces fit simultaneously together into a puzzle title that the world knows today as The Lost Generation.
