Values Paper In 2005 our country endured three disastrous storms. The first was Hurricane Katrina, second was Hurricane Rita, and the third was FEMA’s cover up of lethal levels of Formaldehyde found in plywood used to build trailers for storm victims. Formaldehyde can off-gas from materials made with it. Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas. When present in the air at levels above 0.1 ppm (parts in a million parts of air), it can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes, nose and throat, nausea, coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, skin rashes, and allergic reactions. It also has been observed to cause cancer in scientific studies using laboratory animals and may cause cancer in humans. Typical exposures to humans are much lower; thus any risk of causing cancer is believed to be small at the level at which humans are exposed. Formaldehyde can affect people differently. Some people are very sensitive to formaldehyde while others may not have any noticeable reaction to the same level. Persons have developed allergic reactions (allergic skin disease and hives) to formaldehyde through skin contact with solutions of formaldehyde or durable-press clothing containing formaldehyde. Others have developed asthmatic reactions and skin rashes from exposure to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is just one of several gases present indoors that may cause illnesses. Many of these gases, as well as colds and flu, cause similar…show more content…

Which the trailer idea may have had some utility in the beginning but once they learned of the toxic fumes they should of warned the residents of the trailers. They instead tried to cover up the toxins and families had to suffer from that decision. This would have been a very hard decision to make because of government, people involved ,and possible legal actions. I would have not been able to sleep knowing that these families were living in a poisoned trailers. “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil: He will dwell on high; his place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; Bread will be given him, his water will be sure” Isaiah 33:14-16. I think this passage would have helped FEMA Director R. David Paulison if he would have read it when he decided to put a lid on the
