Introduction
Everyone desires to work in a place that is trusted, safe and conducive to positive patient outcomes. Many factors can influence a healthy work environment. Among these factors are skilled communication between staff, patient and their family members. Other factors are the cultivation of new leaders, recruitment and retention of new nurses without neglecting the novice nurse (Ebright, 2010). Finally the professional nurse should have enhanced autonomy and control over nursing practice (Weston, 2010). As written by Kupperschmidt, Kientz, Ward, & Reinholz, “the bottom line is that a healthy work environment begins with each individual nurse, i.e., it begins with you!” (2010).
Review of the Professional Nursing Literature Many nursing organizations have addressed what takes to maintain a healthy work environment. It has been commonly described as a place the employee trust, where it can communicate and collaborate with each other feeling emotionally and physically safe (Kupperschmidt, et al., 2010). Nursing literature is readily available and easy to access. Many research publications on the subject of maintenance of a healthy workplace can be accessed through different search engines. The Joint Commission has been encouraging hospitals seeking accreditation to address the issue about disruptive behavior among staff members (Longo, 2010). Which brings up the importance of good communication in the work place. The authors of Kupperschmidt, et al., support the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics that states “professional nurses have an ethical mandate to become skilled communicators” and continue suggesting that enhances their ability to interact respectfully with all team members and to attain and
