After selling their lies and plans for the war to the America people, congress had given President Bush carte blanche to bring justice to those who caused pain and destruction on American soil. Abu Ghraib Prison, also known as Baghdad Central Prison, became the U.S Army detention center for captured Iraqis. “For decades under Saddam Hussein, many prisoners who were taken to the Abu Ghraib prison never came out. It was the centerpiece of Saddam's empire of fear, and those prisoners who did make it out told nightmarish tales of torture beyond imagining – and executions without reason.” (Abuse of Iraqi POWS by GIs Probed, 2004) In 2004 rumors began to surface, regarding the abuse of prisoners held by the U.S army. Initially the U.S media expressed little interest to the accusations, until photographic evidence emerged, exposing the violation of the prisoner’s human rights.
The US in fighting communism, was fighting the wrong enemy, they were arrogant and thought that they knew best. 2. Use of military firepower - bombing villages, towns, the Ho Chi Minh trail. This killed a lot of South Vietnamese people, destroyed their farms and livelihoods etc. It's best not to antagonise the people you are trying to help.
War has then become a natural extension of this role, and whether it is defined as just or unjust is determined by its effect on the position of the US and its allies. Inevitably, all civilizations have to deal with war, whether purposefully waging it or defending against it. World history is filled with bloody conflicts between states, the results of which have changed the way the world interacts. Our country was even formed as a result of a war against colonial oppression. At the time it was endlessly debated as to whether going to war with the British was the right thing to do, but it was eventually decided that it was necessary in order to gain our independence.
You can see where a problem would arise here. The pilots would have no idea who they are dropping their bombs on, just what coordinates it is. Bombs were dropped on US soldiers everyday but more vital, local South Vietnamese. America might not have understood at the time but they were the biggest recruiter for their own enemy. Every village destroyed, brother killed, livestock murdered.
Throughout his whole speech, he uses an anger and disparaging tome to reflect Bush’s point of view. Overall, George Bush uses emotional appeal, metaphors, and tone to portray Al Qaeda as iniquitous freedom haters which persuades the audience to recognise his contention and accept his point of view. Americans are depicted as victims of war from the September 11th terrorist incident with George Bush’s speech. An anecdote is used in the first paragraph to portray this: “...Americans have known the casualties of war--but not at the centre of a great city on a peaceful morning. Americans have known surprise attacks—but never before on thousands of civilians.
The war began due to North Vietnam being a communist country, while the US wanted to prevent a communist country taking over the south part of Vietnam. The media played an important role in the war, as the media brought the war into the American’s homes, showing the Americans all the realities of warfare. Many things were showed to the Americans. The coverage that the media showed to the Americans horrified them in many ways: wounded civilians, children who had lost their parents, many villages destroyed, search and destroy missions etc. The war was pointless in the American’s eyes and they thought that America had no right to impose its views on Vietnam.
There was the incident at the Gulf of Tonkin, North Vietnamese torpedo boats supposedly attacked the USS. There were Escalation and finally the US pulls out. Most people, found this event senseless. A form of protest to the war came through pop culture and songs. “War” was first recorded with The Temptations.
These series of attacks that singlehandedly changed the course of the war by planting seeds of unrest into the minds the American public are known today as the Tet Offensive. Since the 1940’s, General Vo Nguyen Giap was the Commanding General of the North Vietnam Army. Giap served under Ho Chi Minh and was one of the main forces in the victory at Dien Bien Phu, which drove the French forces out of Vietnam in 1954. During the battle of Dien Bien Phu, General Giap is quoted stating that he was, “…willing to lose ten men for every one enemy soldier killed” (Bui Tin 2002, 67). This statement by itself is a clear indicator that General Giap was willing to do anything to defeat the French and win the war.
“Hit and run” tactics are used against enemy bases and communications to demoralize the enemy. A good example of the ideal conditions needed for guerilla warfare is shown in struggles which have involved ordinary people going against an imperial power, such as at the end of WW1. During times like these, the rebels were often very poorly equipped and were therefore, unable to defeat the conquering power by conventional means and rather, had to rely more on the support of the people. The areas of the world where guerilla war has been very successful and which have been suitable for the practice of guerilla warfare,
The Islamic nation feels the need to always be in attack mode because of the big threat that the United States poses as. The catastrophic and rebellion among the Islamic people is what is tearing them down and not the United States. The ongoing battles between the United States and the Middle Eastern nations have been going on long enough. The deepest part of the conflict comes from the fact that each country does not actually know how powerful the other one is. The Middle Eastern should see its own nation as a threat and not that the United States is a threat to them.
