Upward Motion Walden University Jennifer Bosetski If you ask someone about their social class, their definition might be different from the one you observe or think. On Dictionary.com there are two different definitions for social class; the first is “a broad group in society having common economic, cultural, or political status” (2013). The second definition is “people having the same social, economic, or educational status; "the working class"; "an emerging professional class” (2013). I have not thought about social class and the categories since my first time in college. During that time, I thought of myself as middle class, but looking back I was lower class. Categorizing others and myself is very subjective. When I was in college I was surround by people who, at the time, in the same situation as me. My comparison was strictly based on my immediate surroundings. My fellow students and I were poor college students working waitressing jobs, just for an extra 20 dollars to go out. I did know at the time that I was attending college to move my way up to the upper class; the proverbial American Dream. Now I am in my 30’s and have a career as a Registered Nurse and would consider myself middle class now. I compare myself with my immediate surroundings, the people I work with, and…show more content…
I disagree that we are taught that America is a classless society; I think we have always are aware of the class of people that exist. Although social class does not hold the same parameters as it did 50 years ago, but social class is very evident today. Mass media has made Americans more aware of the major poverty that exists and the billionaires that live the very high class life. Media allows access to see how the other half lives. The public is able to see rags-to-riches stories and believe that could be me one
