Dementia Awareness Q1.1) Explain what is meant by the term ‘dementia’. A) Dementia is a term used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. It’s a progressive disease that affected the brain’s cognitive functions. Q1.2) Describe the key functions of the brain that are affected by dementia. A) The key functions that are affected by dementia are vision, memory, hearing, language and learning, which the temporal lobe (bottom left front lobe of the brain) is responsible for.
UNIT 13 Dementia Awareness 1- Understand what dementia is 1.1 Explain what is meant by th term 'dementia' The term 'dementia' describes a set of symptoms which include loss of memory, mood changes, and problems with communication and reasoning. These symptoms occur when the brain is damaged by certain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and damage caused by a series of small strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse. How fast dementia progresses will depend on the individual person and what type of dementia they have. Each person is unique and will experience dementia in their own way.
Unit 4222-237 Dementia Awareness Outcome 1 Understand what dementia is: 1.1 What is meant by the term ‘dementia’: The term 'dementia' is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. These include Alzheimer's disease and sometimes as a result of a stroke. 1.2 The key functions of the brain that are affected by dementia : Dementia is a condition of the brain which causes a gradual loss of mental ability, including problems with memory, understanding, judgement, thinking and language. In addition, other problems commonly develop such as changes in personality and changes in the way someone interacts with others in social situations. As dementia progresses, the ability of someone to look after themselves from day to day may also become affected.
If it is genuine dementia it won't get better. There is medication to ease the symptoms but no cure. 2.1: A medical model for dementia would be when a persons memory is affected by a medical disease or a condition as a result of brain trauma which affects the area of the brain that is responsible for memory. Dementia is an umbrella term that covers a wide variety of ailments that affects a person ability to remember. It can range from a bump to the head to a medical disease that attacks the brains ability to function correctly, such as vascular dementia that alters blood flow to the brain.
DEM-301 Understand the Process and Experience of Dementia 1.1 Describe a range of causes of dementia syndrome. Fixed cognitive impairments are due to a single incident.traumatic brain injurys may cause generalised damage to the white matter of the brain or localised damages. A brief reduction in the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain may lead to this type of dementia. A stroke or brain infection can also be the cause of dementia. Excessive alcoholic intake results in alcoholic dementia.
365 Understand the process and experience of Dementia. 1.1 Describe the range of causes of dementia syndrome. Dementia syndrome can be caused by a number of difference conditions, which is sometimes called mixed dementia. Different causes include, a specific disease like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, a cerebral vascular accident like a stroke or brain trauma, or a group of conditions or brain disorders. 1.2 Describe the types of memory impairment commonly experienced by individuals with dementia.
Vascular dementia is caused when there is a reduction in the blood flow to the brain. Over time, this can damage the parts of the brain which play a large part of a person memory, speech and attention. A stroke can play a part in this type of dementia when it narrows the blood vessels to the brain. Dementia with Lewy Bodies is caused by lumps of protein which builds up inside nerve cells inside the brain, the proteins damage the nerve cells and how they work, these nerves are responsible for thinking, memory and movement of a person. Dementia with Lewy Bodies can be closely related to Parkinsons Disease and there is a theory that Dementia with Lewy Bodies interferes with two neurotransmitters called dopamine and acetylcholine which assist in the brains functions.
NCFE Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Dementia care (600/6355/5) Unit 01: Dementia awareness 1.1 Explain what is meant by the term ‘dementia’. Answer: The term dementia' describes a set of symptoms caused by damage to the brain like confusion in a familiar place, loss of memory, changes in mood, and problems with thinking, reading, communication and reasoning. There are several types of Dementia. 1.2 Describe the key functions of the brain that are affected by dementia. Answer: The hippocampus this is the main area affected by Dementia it is responsible for memory forming, organizing and storing and emotions.
2. Understand key features of the theoretical models of dementia. 2.1: Outline the medical model of dementia. The medical model is generally referred to the overall functions of the brain from its previous to current form. Due to the progressive nature of the condition, this could refer to speech, thought processes, social interactions, rationalisation of day-to-day routines and situations, memory loss, generally short term.
Unit 237 - Dementia Awareness Understand what dementia is Explain what is meant by the term ‘dementia’ Dementia describes a range of signs and symptoms that occur to an individual when part of the brain is affected by certain diseases and various conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulty thinking. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse over time. Dementia affects people at different stages of life, affects different parts of the brain and at different speeds. Describe the key functions of the brain that are – affected by dementia The Brain Brain cells Spinal cord Frontal lobe Parietal lobe Temporal lobe Cerebellum Occipital lobe Explain why depression, delirium and age-related memory impairment may be mistaken for dementia The above symptoms are very similar to Dementia and this is why people get mistaken, it is very important that an individual with symptoms gets assessed by a GP to determine the condition.
