In fairness this isn’t because they have a problem with taking in information or recall but because they have been away from the learning (and resultant testing) environment. For some people who have been on our Managing Safely training it has been over 30 years since they last sat any type of exam. That means that some of the questions are multiple choice and some ask you to list answers. The first question on the paper is often a multiple choice question giving you 3 optional answers. Only one is correct. Other multiple choice questions normally consist of 6 options, 3 of which are correct. Take care. These multiple choice questions include ‘negative marking’. That means that for every answer you get correct you will get 1 point but for every answer that you get incorrect you will lose 1 point. Many questions are potentially similar such as ‘what are the benefits of….’ Or ‘what are the reasons for….’. The answers would be completely different. Read through the paper. This can help to calm the nerves and it is believed that your subconscious is working on the answers as you go through the paper. Tackle the questions that you can answer immediately first. Where lists are asked for and you have a mnemonic on the tip of your tongue, write the mnemonic down and come back and fill in the gaps later. If you cannot answer it instantly move on. Having answered those that you can deal with in an instant go back to the beginning and tackle those questions that take a little thought but don’t linger too long. If you find that you are getting bogged down because you can’t remember the answer move on. Now go back and deal with those questions that you have difficulty with. You may benefit from taking a mental break. Think abut something else for a few minutes and come back to them. At the end of the day what you don’t know, you don’t know. You have an hour to complete the paper. Don’t sit there after 15 minutes worrying about the few answers that you don’t know. You will likely increase your levels of anxiety and feel miserable about the whole situation. Move
