Uniforms In Boston Public Schools

Humans have persevered to protect the rights of an individual since existence. Currently people are still confronted by politicians, governments, and societies conceiving to conform the masses. The issue of individuality is one of the concerns that sprout from the debate of Boston Public Schools enforcing the use of uniforms. Boston Public Schools do not currently impose a uniform in all of its facilities; instead the decision is left on a local level for each school to resolve. This is something that has led parents to discuss and express their opinions for and against uniforms. The line is blurred for some. I see the line crystal clear. Boston Public Schools should not dictate the use of uniforms because not only does it suppress individuality, but it also hinders the experience of a comfortable school environment. Uniform by definition is constant, unvarying, and undeviating which directly contradicts the significance of individuality. By executing the demand of uniforms, Boston Public Schools is abolishing the opportunity that every student deserves to express themselves. The leading argument being that it will help ensure equality among students and decrease bullying. To favor this view, would mean to support the disguising of a tragic reality; something that would not prepare students for the world beyond schooling. It would also not stop bullying. Students would find other characteristics to tease about. To kill bullying you must aim at the reasons, not carelessly shoot at the means it is being done through. The cost of losing the freedom and right to be an individual, as well as a comfortable learning environment, are far greater than imagined. Boston Public Schools must not require the use of uniforms.
