Uniforms Do Not Form the Student, So Why Impose Them? High school is usually a time when students begin to differentiate themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out at the same time. This is why students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. By being forced to wear school uniforms, teens are unable to express their individuality and a students' right of self-expression is deprived.
As the day we came into this world, we are secured to be treated with respect and granted freedom. Although parents have the rights to speak in their children's lives, it is wrong for them to manipulate and control every aspect of their lives. If our parents’ actions become excessively intolerable, it should be our right to demonstrate against such power and shut them down, to the benefit of the children. The history of our nefarious parents calls for independence from such overpowering power. To prove our arguments, let our facts be submitted, they have told us to challenge ourselves to take Honors and Advanced Placement courses to improve our grades, but constantly nagging us for having too much homework.
Because American culture is based on people’s desire to succeed at all cost, this negatively affects their values. A negative effect on integrity, morality, and ethics means contempt of these three concepts. Ethics are society’s normal view of morals, morals are spoken beliefs about what is right and wrong, and integrity of an individual’s ability to uphold these standards of morality and ethics. However, American society is focused on winning at all cost and this sometimes displaces a person’s integrity, morals and ethics. Americans do not care about have integrity as long as they win.
Should school uniforms be mandatory? That is the question being debated by many school districts around the United States. Many parents are against the idea, but there are also many parents wanting school uniforms to be mandatory in the school system that their children attend. There are several pros and cons on whether school uniforms should be mandatory. After talking with several parents, and reading up on what the experts are saying about the issue, self expression, cost and being comfortable in the learning environment are reasons why I vote against making school uniforms mandatory.
As a parent of my own two teenagers, being in agreement with their choice of clothing sometimes comes to a battle stand. I do not want my children exposing themselves any more than necessary to the public in general or at school. As a result, Wayne County School District Board is convening soon to again review the dress code policy that is in place for our county. Uniforms and stricter dress codes are ever becoming the more positive choice at hand, both the educators and for parents like me. Much to the chagrin of my teens, I will be voting in favor of uniforms, or the strictest dress code policy options available.
One thing that is certain, however, is that we would not dare wear anything deemed “inappropriate” by our parents or any other adult; at least most of us would not! Today’s society and children are a different breed altogether; they will push boundaries as far as they can and show more skin than we did in our bathing suits, regardless of what authority figures say or think. Dress codes are important in a public school to keep things at an even balance. Students can focus more on who they are than what they are wearing, improving their self-esteem. “School officials have a responsibility to provide a safe, secure, and productive learning environment.
In Source A, Gatto begins by asking his audience a profound question, “Do we really need school?” Of course, this may sound impractical; however, he does not mean that kids should not get an education. State education and student individuality are what cause much tension in public schools. It is in the schools’ best interest to balance these ideas and not lean towards only one, and not have a school only based on conformity or individuality, but a school that balances both of these. There are mandatory classes that are set as a basic system so as to have standard classes for everyone, since everyone must learn the same things, i.e. math, reading, and science.
I understand his idea, but the fact is that uniforms did not help the students. One of the critical reasons parents believe that students to wear school uniforms is that uniforms provide safety for students. What they mean is that it will eliminate bullying and violence in schools since students will not judge each other on what they wear. Parents also mention that since all the students wear the same uniform, it is easier to identify people that are not from the school, creating a better safety for the students. Another important reason parents explain is that in a uniform-worn high school, students seem to act more discipline.
Prayer in public schools is becoming a hotly disputed topic. Congress might amend the Constitution to allow prayer in public schools. I am against this idea. Some people agree that prayer in public schools is censored and belittles their faith, but I will argue that public schools are supposed to be fair and need to respect the rights of everyone. Supporters of this idea state that we are stifling spiritual beliefs and teaching children to be disrespectful towards religion.
Conformity in Schools Although many people think schools should be conformed to show who has control, conformity actually just takes away from students individuality as proven by, schools making students dress a certain way, what classes are mandatory, and telling students how to prepare for standardized tests, illustrating that conformity in schools makes students less individualized. Schools making students dress a certain way takes away from their individual expression. Some schools ban kids from wearing any kind of logos/symbols/colors because of gang affiliations. If such rules are so severe, students may take extreme measures to change their look. For example, wearing crazy accessories, hair style, decorating backpacks, etc.
