Understanding the need for discipline in the Uniformed Public Services In this assignment I will be explaining the need for the role of discipline within the Uniformed Public Services and also the importance of discipline. I will be backing this up with case studies and my knowledge to explain why orders need to be followed, the consequences of lack of discipline and the effect it has on social order. Discipline is used to set rules for individuals to follow to keep them in line, if rules are then broken discipline should be used to punish the individual(s) in consequences for their actions. Orders are an essential part of the public services as they take care of the safety of other people and allows for minimum mistakes to happen. Rules, regulations and orders all work together to ensure that everything which needs gets done in the correct way. An example of this would be being in dangerous situations in Afghanistan and being disciplined, the soldiers are following the rules in order to save their lives as well as others. Team spirit- Many young people aim to join the uniformed public services because of what it has to offer such as adventure and job satisfaction. However, due to the demanding requirements it is not easy to get accepted into the services. It requires the individual to have traits such as courage, determination, integrity and physical fitness. If an individual as gained acceptance into the public services they will gain a sense of pride and will then build trust, respect and loyalty with other members of the services. The police force have ‘Police Discipline Regulations’ which ensure that officers have a duty to act in a way that will not put the reputation of the police service in a bad light, by this they must not discredit the service or any of the members on or off duty. Serving the Public- Each of the different uniformed public services’ aims and objectives is to serve and protect the public. An example of this would be the police and fire service whose aim is to protect life and property whilst the armed forces aim is to defend the UK from overseas terrorists.
