3.1 There are a wide variety of techniques used for sampling the evidence of assessment which are all valuable for different reasons. Site or Direct observation is the best way to evaluate the assessor’s ability to carry out a fair and valid assessment. The observation should ideally take place in the work environment and involve the learner carrying out specific tasks as required for inclusion in the learner’s portfolio of evidence. The IV can quickly establish the effect of the assessment on the learner and can get a good impression of the rapport that the assessor has with the learner. It will also show the IV the ability of the assessor to extract the necessary information required for suitable assessment which can be evaluated against the national standards. Through sampling evidence site locally, it allows the IV to carry out face to face conversations with the assessor and also the learners. It also allows the IV to question any evidence the assessor has put forward. This will then support the validity of the work produced by the assessor and learner. When sampling the evidence it is important that a range of assessments are sampled such as observation, Q&A, professional discussions and records of evidence. This should also take place across a number of learners and across different units. Technology can be used when assessing through either the use of video evidence or the use of a Dictaphone through Q&A. If this is carried out correctly it can prove to be a valuable tool to allow for good assessor quality evaluation and training. This is can also be used when learner is working too far away or if the employer cannot allow the assessor to be there in person due to potential access limitations as an example.
