Thomas Humphry 2-29-12 English 1020 Sec 047 Should the U of M campus go smoke-free? The University of Memphis campus should go smoke-free. As well all know there are quite a few smokers that attend college and might smoke frequently. I don’t think that a school campus is the place to smoke because you could possibly have a lot of un-needed issues and conflicts for non-smokers. Even though there are designated places now on campus to smoke it really defeats the purpose because people don’t abide by the specific rules that should be followed so that everyone can be satisfied in some way. People throw cigarette butts on the ground instead of in the trash to try and keep out campus looking clean. Certain people might think otherwise because having a smoke-free campus would jeopardize some people’s health. Smoking can be addictive but can help people in some positive ways for that moment. The designated smoke areas sounded like a good idea at first so that smokers would have specific places to smoke under certain rules. No one wants a dirty campus that can be caused by careless smokers that throw their cigarette butts all over campus. Non-smokers can be affected by second-hand smoke and also the health of certain students would be at risk. With this being said it would work better if people would follow the rules and stop being careless. An opposing view might say that a smoke-free campus is not a big issue to deal with. They may argue that pollution is caused by many other reasons than just smoking. Although smoking can put your health as well as the health of others at risk anyone can go to the doctor and be treated. They may argue that smoking is not a big issue for people who inhale second hand smoke because you can easily just walk away from the smoke. Although there are a lot of smokers who attend college I would say I still agree with a completely
