Typical Day at Work

It was a typical summer day several years ago and I was still a firefighter at Station 4. The temperature was going to be a scorching 99 degrees that day, with high humidity. The local weather channel reported that no rain was insight for possible relief of the high temperatures. We had already traded out with the other shift so we could get our day started. The 0815 morning announcements had the majority of the city going to EMT classes throughout the day for our monthly update. Luckily, the EMT class for Station 4 was that morning and we wouldn’t have much to do in the afternoon, since it was probably going to be over one hundred degrees with the heat index. At 0900 we reported to Station One for our class, and as usual when we arrived all the guys were standing around talking, catching up or just shooting the breeze. We talked for a few minutes and then the instructor called everyone in so we could get started. While sitting in class at the fire station the bell sounded for a call. The dispatcher started rattling off companies to respond and we were the third due engine on this alarm. “Attention Battalion 2, Engine 3, Quint 4, Engine 9, Engine 6, Ladder 2 and Squad 2, respond 200 Hodgin St on a reported building fire.” All the guys jumped and tore off running towards the bay, to put on our bunker gear. I was the first one on the truck and was yelling, “Are you guys coming or what?” The captain and driver finally got their gear on and boarded the truck. As the truck cranked and we pulled out on the front ramp, everyone except the driver was still hustling to get the rest of the equipment donned. We were responding to a reported building fire on the south side of town, which we knew to be a rough area.
