Tyler Clementi was known as a “smart, talented and creative young man (Tyler's Story, n.d.).” Tyler decided the summer after he graduated, that he would share with his family and friends that he was gay. This can be a difficult act for some, coming out that they are homosexual, but he wanted to be honest about who he was with those close to him. The semester after his high school graduation, “Tyler attended Rutgers University where he was excited to learn, grow, and have the freedom to live openly as a gay man (Tyler's Story, n.d.).” During his time at Rutgers University, Tyler was subjected to cyber-bullying. His roommate invaded his privacy and accessed his webcam while Tyler had a male in his dorm room. The roommate viewed Tyler and this male in an intimate act, and posted it online. Tyler’s personal privacy was invaded by his roommate when a webcam video of him in an intimate act with another man was posted and discussed by his roommate, Dharun Ravi. The sudden stigma Tyler experienced due to being exposed and outed via the invasion of his privacy caused Clementi to sink into a depression. Later subject to derision and contempt from Ravi’s twitter followers due to the perceived deviant nature of the webcam video, Tyler committed suicide by jumping from the George Washington Bridge. Ravi would later be convicted of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy. He was not, however, convicted of a hate crime. Ravi was sentenced to what many thought was a lenient term of 30 days in prison, of which only 20 days would be served.
