November 11, 2011 Private Healthcare: The Secrets Within One of the most recognizable features of Canada is our public healthcare. Our healthcare system is world renowned, and makes other countries green with envy. It was first conceived in 1947, by Tommy Douglas in Saskatchewan. It was introduced to provide the people of Saskatchewan with affordable medical care. This system has been used ever since, and provides Canadians with up to $5000 dollars of medical coverage for surgery, abrupt hospital visits, and other uses (Canada, 2009). For years, many political leaders have pushed the idea of a two-tiered healthcare system. The public system will be for the rest of the population, who will have overall coverage, and will only pay for some of their medical needs. A private health care system is not necessary because the public health care system helps everyone, no matter their thier age or wealth, it would give doctors a larger income than normal, and many quality doctors that work in a public hospital would switch to hospitals that are privately run. It isn`t necessary to have a two-tiered health care system, as it will threaten the health and safety of the public health care system. Firstly, Canada does not need a two-tiered healthcare system because in a public system, everyone is treated equally. The public healthcare system was made to accommodate everyone in Canada, no matter their level of wealth. A rich person could go to the hospital and get taken care of, and a person with limited money could do the same. The public system does not judge, and treats everyone the same. In Ontario, there are currently 211 hospitals helping to maintain a healthy population (Tunstall, 2009). These hospitals help everyone that comes in, unlike private hospitals. A two-tiered system does not have a place in Canada because the public healthcare system treats everyone as equals. A private system would provide the doctors with aggrandized incomes, and lots of important doctors would switch to the private system and work in private hospitals.
