The author uses allusion usually to describe protagonist Scott Hudson’s interest of reading. Allusion is the making reference to other novels, myths, etc. He makes inferences to books like Ender’s Game, To Kill a Mockingbird, Kubla Khan, The Waltz, The Princess Bride, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Outsiders and many more. Allusion creates an understanding of the plot because it is vitally descriptive of some of the rising action leading up to action and falling action leading to resolution. Without allusion, some of those actions would not make as much sense because they are not open to as much reference.
Hill’s use of the first person narrator is a key element of the novel. Susan Hill’s characters in this novel have limited development because the story is told by the main character, Arthur Kipps. His character is developed in an interesting way because as narrator he is looking back and describing events from the perspective of his younger self. This adds depth to his character and to the plot because as readers, we live through his nightmare with him and share his fears. This viewpoint is particularly effective in this chapter, as readers, we can relate to the terror and anxiety felt by Arthur.

Growing up, Poe felt lonely and a sense of loss. Because of growing up with those emotions, Poe’s works are full of horror, mystery, and fear. Throughout the story of Fall House of Usher, a creepy feeling is maintained from the beginning to the end. Poe’s usage of literary devices and choice of words are what use to maintain the creepy feeling.
The book Velocity written by Dean Koontz is a book I chose to read because I really like mysteries. I have a big interest in mysteries and just the title of the book Velocity took my interest. There were several interesting characters in this book. Billy Wiles was the main character who was being terrorized. Barbara Mandel was his fiance who was in a coma.
Since “The Things They Carried” is a collection of short stories, it automatically has multiple meanings. For some the meaning may simply be viewed as a novel of one’s life during the Vietnam War, but it is in fact much more than that. This novel explores such topics as: love, war, relationships, and the reality of the things that not only the characters but we too carry. These meanings are not direct but after reading can be discovered. The next thing that qualifies this book as a classic is the fact that it uses effective, unique style appropriate to the purpose and content.

As I Lay Dying The novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner tends to make readers confused when beginning to read it due to the theme the book entails. One of the main themes in the novel would have to be the difference of what are the truth and the explanation of what is true. Without a doubt any point is able to end in a massive amount of what is biased due to the different characters and their individual point of views. Each thought they have on what they believe true is dependent on their previous outlooks and thoughts. With that being said anything that is alleged can’t always necessarily be the truth.
For a piece that can be read in one short sitting, ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ evokes an impressive level of fear. To bring about such strong emotion in so little space, Gilman simultaneously makes use of several plot devices woven carefully into the short story. One such element is dramatic irony, which occurs when the full significance of characters’ thoughts or actions is understood by the audience but not the characters themselves. Dramatic irony is almost omnipresent the genre of horror due to its power to add suspense and a sense of dread to a plot, but Gilman cleverly uses it to serve other purposes as well. The dramatic irony in ‘The Yellow Wall-Paper’ not only adds to the story’s horror, it also creates the illusion that readers have power over the plot and that ideas presented in the story come from the themselves rather than from the author.
As we grew up in middle school and high school, we were often taught to write summaries of our reading. Writing a summary is simply taking the authors original text and condensing it. Both the original text and the summary share the same meaning and thoughts, simply in to different forms. Writing analyses can be interpreted in a different ways. When a writer writes analytically, they go into more depth of the original text.
