Trench Diary. 1915 December 06 – This morning I went to volunteer for the army. I signed the papers and I was a recruit. I was sent to a training camp in our local area. We were sent into the barracks and we got changed into our uniforms. Then before we could settle they forced us into the cold to be inspected. The camp head gave us a lecture on our training. 1915 December 09 – Three days straight we woke up bright and early to march about on the parade ground. They didn’t tell us about the trenches. We still do not have our equipment; we used wooden sticks in our drills for guns. I am tired but excited. 1915 December 11 – Last night they sent us across the English channel to our allies, the French. We were packed into a small open topped boat at the dead of night. No one was talking we all just sat there in silence. I couldn’t tell who was sitting next to me although I knew that he didn’t brush his teeth that day. 1915 December 13 – The training was intense today, 10 hours. My limbs feel like they are going to fall off. The lads are groaning and I don’t blame them. They say that they are only pushing us this hard to show us what it’s like fighting the Germans. 1915 December 20 – Finally I made it to Belgium and we are sitting in our trench. Our Sergeant told us not to look over the top of the walls of the trench. I listened to him but others couldn’t help themselves. Someone shot at us from the enemy trench but luckily missed by an Inch. That taught them, they didn’t look over again. 1915 December 25 – Christmas day – The Germans sang Silent Night today. We replied with Good King Wenceslas. There was some shouting between the Germans and Us. Both sides got out of there trench and greeted each other. A football was brought out and let loose.
