Geriatrics specialists, Dr. Sally K. Rigler refers to the significance of this in a notable American Family Physician article. Rigler (2000) emphasized, “…the causes of alcohol may be increased in elderly patients because of pharmacologic changes associated with aging. Aging modifies the body’s responsiveness to alcohol and other substances including the manner and rate of absorption, distribution, and excretion” (p. 171). This harsh analysis is yet another reminder of how serious the problems related to alcohol abuse and the elderly have been ignored and disregarded. Unfortunately, older persons are more associated with conditions such as Alzheimer and arthritic pain before they are diagnosed with alcoholism.
The veil that someone is high on drugs is that equivalent to the majority of schizophrenics (National Mental Health Institute, 2007). Though drug addiction is not always the case in patients a larger factor, however, is the need for many schizophrenics to intake nicotine. Most people suffering from schizophrenia will consume some sort of nicotine at three times that of a normal citizen, which raises the question if it is brain dependence to the chemical (National Mental Health Institute, 2007). Researchers today are looking to see if it is a biological need or if many patients realize that the drug will combat many of the medications and treatments given by the therapists. Depression is often misinterpreted in residual schizophrenic, one who no longer suffers from hallucinations, but has no will to live (Mental Health America, 2011).
Jeffrey Bourguignon Best Evidence Paper EM 6305 Fall 2011 PICO Question In COPD patients, does breathing rehabilitation or anxiolytics produce a greater reduction in anxiety and subsequent dyspnea? Search Strategy The search terms I initially used to find material suitable for this assignment were: COPD, anxiety, pulmonary, rehabilitation, treatment, dyspnea, quality of life. Search Outcome My search returned 80 papers, of which 22 were free full texts. 21 of the papers were relevant to my query and supported pulmonary rehabilitation programs for patients with COPD to reduce anxiety and thus, dyspnea. Relevant Articles Table Article | Patient Group | Study Type | Outcomes | Key Results | Study Weaknesses | 1 | 45 patients - 13 male, 32 female, mean age 67.4 years | Observational Study | Pts who completed pulmonary program showed improvement on all four scales.
Outline and Evaluate one explanations of sleep disorders Narcolepsy is caused by disruption of sleep wake cycle, where sufferers fall asleep randomly, often whilst engaging in some kind of activity. It is a long-term neurological condition that disrupts normal sleeping patterns which affects 1 in 2000 individuals. The two main symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness and episodes of cataplexy which is loss of muscular control which often happens when laughing. Other symptoms include sleep paralysis and hallucinations, both experienced when falling asleep and waking up, and disturbed night-time sleep. Narcolepsy usually begins in adolescence and the type of severity of symptoms vary from person to person and may either worsen or improve with time.

Lewy Body Dementia Lewy body dementia, or LBD is one of the most common types of progressive dementia. It is closely related to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease making it difficult for doctors to identify a definitive diagnosis. LBD is thought to be the second or third most common case of dementia. The symptoms of LBD are progressive cognitive decline, fluctuation, frequent drowsiness, lethargy, “spacing out” for long periods of time, disorganized speech or confusion, visual hallucinations, and loss of spontaneous movement. These symptoms are caused by the build-up of Lewy bodies, which are clumps of alpha-synuclein and ubiquitin protein in the nuclei of neurons.

These include mania stages, delusions, hallucinations, abnormal moods and thinking patterns, suicide attempts, and major depression (Mondimore, Francis Mark 4). One of the difficulties of detecting childhood mental disorders is that symptoms such as emotional outbursts, anxiety, and depression are also a natural part of childhood development (McCredie, Scott). Dr. Bill Womack, associate professor of psychiatry and behavior science at the University of Washington School of Medicine, focuses on three as warranting serious attention. There was a definite point at which the unusual behavior started and the behavior persists more than two months (McCredie, Scott). Also, if the child isn't functioning normally in daily life (McCredie, Scott).
