What is tourism? According to the Oxford Dictionary, tourism is defined as the commercial organization and operation of vacations and visits to places of interest. Why is the Caribbean such a huge tourist attraction? There are many things that make the islands of the Caribbean such big tourist attractions, such as their beaches and their people but the main one is climate. Why do people travel all the way from Alaska to the small islands of the Cayman Islands? Because of its climate! The Caribbean's warm climate attracts people from all over the world. There are some Caribbean countries where tourists do get more privileges than the locals. In the Bahamas there are casinos where only tourists are allowed in to. The locals are not allowed to go in the casinos. Also in duty free stores, tourists get more discounts in form of duty waivers and therefore get more opportunities for duty free goods. Locals do not get these discounts in all Caribbean countries. While in the past, locals may have looked at this as discrimination when in reality it is an incentive. As I have said before, countries only allow tourists in casinos so that more tourists are attracted to the island. The primary reason of tourists being allowed to do more things than locals is to attract more tourists to the islands. When more tourists come to the islands more money is brought it to the economy. I believe that locals should be allowed to have the same privileges as tourists. If this happens then more money will be brought in to the economy coming from? This is why locals should have the same privileges as tourists, therefore when it is not tourist season, money will still be brought in to the economy except by tourists. Overall, I believe that the Caribbean can still depend on tourism for economic development. All that needs to be done is to allow locals to have the same
