George Elliot, an English novelist stated “it is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view” (qtd. in Goodreads). Tony Alamo, a manipulative preacher, is a prime example of a narrow-minded individual. In his article, “Taking Sides”, he claims, “it is the responsibility of honest and upright adults to weed out the novels that would damage children”. He continues his claim that the works of well-known authors such as Shakespeare and Hemingway should be banned from American Culture. Tony Alamo’s belief to use censorship as a shield and tool to protect young minds from disintegrating exhibits narrow-mindedness. The first reason Tony Alamo exhibits narrow-mindedness because he states, “Children and young adults in their innocence, often cannot distinguish between good, morally upright concepts and morally unjustified, wrong perverted ideas” (Alamo). What Mr. Alamo is implying is that children and young individuals are not intelligent and can’t make a distinction between good and bad choices. Mr. Alamo needs to understand that children’s brains are like sponges soaking up water. They learn from other people’s mistakes, past mistakes, and good role models. For example, in 1995, teens that used illegal drugs were at about 19 percent compared to 16 percent in 2005. Additionally in 1995, teens that used alcohol were at 40 percent compared to less than 30 percent in 2005 (qtd. in Cloud). Further more teen pregnancy and suicide rates were at it’s lowest in 2005 compared to 1976 and 1980 (Cloud, par. 3). Young adults and children are making wiser decisions in life, and therefore shouldn’t be pointed out for not being able to distinguish between good and bad. Mr. Alamo should not contradict himself and should not make false claims against the innocent. The second reason Tony Alamo exhibits narrow-mindedness because he states, “Young adults do
