Tomorrow When The War Began Essay! In the novel ‘Tomorrow When the War Began,’ courage and bravery are shown when the characters are in danger. Throughout the novel all characters show courage and bravery to save their own lives as well as each other’s. The characters that show most bravery are Ellie and Homer. The narrator Ellie shows a tremendous amount of bravery throughout the whole novel. She has fought soldiers and even killed some to save her and her friends lives. Ellie is a very intelligent girl who can think fast on the spot, she proves this in chapter 7 when she blows up a lawnmower in Mrs Alexander’s backyard. Ellie performed a very courageous act where she took the lives of 2 soldiers. “My hand, which had been very steady till then got the shakes. I tried again, but was shaking too much. Kevin grabbed my wrist. ‘Do it’ he mouthed fiercely in my ear’ (page 90). Here it shows that Ellie does have a heart and was extremely nervous to blow the lawnmower up but with the encouragement from her friend Kevin she knew that’s what had to be done. Ellie wasn’t the only person who showed bravery in the novel, Homer also showed courage and bravery. From the start of the novel to the end, Homer has become braver and less selfish. He used to be a very immature and rude person but the war changes him into a caring person who takes on the role of being the leader of the group. In chapter 11 - Ellie, Robyn and Homer save Lee from a restaurant because Lee had been shot. Ellie and Robyn’s job was to get a bulldozer and put Lee in the bucket of it while Homer got a getaway car. On Page 148, it shows that Homer is risking his own life to try and save Lee’s. “Homer was out of the car. It was a station wagon, a BMW, and he was opening the tailgate and helping Lee in. A bullet hit the car, smashing a hole in the rear passenger door.” It took courage for Homer to help Lee
