He tries to teach his children, Jem and Scout, to use their own heads instead of going with the popular opinion. He also never takes a side in an argument. Despite the fact that Atticus can seem old-fashioned, his ways are very revolutionary, something that is pointed out in his way of raising his children. He allows Scout to wear overalls, event though it violates the community code for little girls. He also does not mind that Calpurnia brought Jem and Scout to the colored church, and he accepts Calpurnia as a part of the family.
“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (p 98) Atticus tells Jem and Scout this when he presents them with a gun for their christmas present and tells them never to shoot a mockingbird.
Morality in To Kill A Mockingbird In To Kill A Mockingbird, morality is proven to be molded to fit where you come from. Ideals, dreams, and the perspective of right and wrong is created from the place you are growing up and the people you surround yourself with. The first example of morality occurs when Scout goes against her wants to make Atticus happy, and without causing troubling with her classmate. Scout states, “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away, "Scout's a cow- ward!" ringing in my ears.
A vision for the future is what everyone is always hoping for. Atticus is the only character that actually has a vision for his kids in the future. He doesn’t want his children to be prejudice, which is one of the most important things he wants to teach them. Atticus explains to Scout, “You never really understand a person until you can consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (34). This quote is a very informative proof for Atticus’ philosophical vision.
Atticus Finch As My Influence Atticus Finch was a man who fought for what he believed in. What he believed in was justice; the quality of being fair and reasonable. He is an influence on me for mainly that reason. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch played Scout’s father and a lawyer; a good one at that. Racism was not a thing of Atticus and he raised his children alone to feel the same way.
Atticus tells his son that he wanted him to read to Mrs Dubose so he would understand that real courage was not demonstrated by a gun. “I wanted you to see something about her – I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her.
Also, his empathy for other beings is shown when later on in the book, Scout is about to crush a roly-poly. Right before she does, Jem says that she shouldn’t. In return, she asks why. He then says that it had never harmed Scout in any way so why should she harm it. This shows a reference to what Atticus and Miss Maudie had said earlier in the book about mockingbirds.
Write about the parenting styles of Atticus Finch and Robert Ewell in “To Kill A Mockingbird” In the town of Maycomb, children are expected to live up to there parents expectations, if not, better. Either children’s parents raise them to be just like them as Atticus Finch does, or the pressure of community expectations that a person lives up, or down, to their family, referring to Robert Ewell. Atticus’s parenting style is quite unique in that he treats his children as adults, honestly answering any question they have. He uses all these instances as an opportunity to pass his values on to Scout and Jem, because he is delighted in helping people see a situation in a new light. Atticus uses this approach not only with his children, but with all of Maycomb, and yet, for all of his mature treatment of Jem and Scout, he patiently recognizes that they are children and that they will make childish mistakes and assumptions.
Kenneth Stanfield. His offense is a felony possession of a controlled substance. His sentence was two years’ probation after 90 days in jail. Mr. Stanfield comes from a divorced family but admits he had a steady home life for the most part. He is single and has never been married.
Contrasting areas between these two poems include the rhyme schemes. “A Barred Owl” is based on an AB rhyme scheme, whereas the structure of “The History Teacher” does not follow a particular format. In “A Barred Owl”, Richard Wilbur writes about how he knows that the real world is cruel. However in “The History Teacher”, Billy Collins is in denial of this cruel world and insists on saving his children and mind washing them to believe that the world is a perfect place where everyone is essentially good. The title of A barred Owl is ironic itself because
