She was finally died of an accident, but continued to bother him even after he had married the heroin. Rebecca was a perfect example of a femme fatale, she was a wonderful woman with a distorted heart. She went against all the basic rule a good wife and had a very strong power over de Winter. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what… According to her views, she [Ms. Dubose] died beholding nothing to nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew (pg. 149).” In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses many such lines to help weave a story about the dramatic events that take place inside the small, quiet town of Maycomb County. Not only does this quote show the skill of Harper Lee to create a captivating story, but it also shows how she was able to incorporate many themes into her novel as well.
Dubose is a perfect example of somebody who possessed courage and somebody that came out of their comfort zone. She was an old, wicked women who was addicted to morphine. She knew she was going to die when Dr. Reynolds said she only had a few months left. Hearing this Mrs. Dubose said that their was still one thing out of order which tells the reader she wanted to do something before she died. Given the news that she was going to die, Mrs. Dubose was not scared, instead she accepted it and stayed calm.
In my opinion, the best theme to describe Atticus is courage, because of his strong morals and beliefs, his contributions to society, and his will power shown in the Tom Robinson case. The first way Atticus shows courage is by his manner of communication with others around him. One of the greatest examples in the book is when he is talking to Jem about the death of Ms. Dubose. Ms. Dubose was a neighbor of the Finch’s and was a morphine addict for many years. She tried to resist taking drugs because she wanted to have a clean bloodstream when she dies.
I did not hear him stir again.” p. 64. The composes uses her narrator Scout to create a clear image of a young boy, visibly shaken by his ordeal of retrieving the lost pants therefore reinforcing the degree of courage it must have taken for him to even contemplate undertaking such a feat. Another character who is representative of this theme is Mrs Dubose. The audience is made acutely aware of the depth of her courage in chapter 11 when she finally passes, her death brought on more rapidly because she refused to die whilst addicted to morphine. Atticus tells his son that he wanted him to read to Mrs Dubose so he would understand that real courage was not demonstrated by a gun.
During the book Mrs Dubose dies from being a morphine addict "It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." Atticus says this to Scout and Jem showing them what courage is, because Mrs Dubose tried to give up morphine but being an addict she
So in all the author not only conforms to stereotype of woman but also men in a positive and negative way. At the end of the scene Jem is sent to retrieve the tire from the Radleys yard, it is certain that the author would choose him over scout because of their gender. Jem criticizes Scout by saying “Scout you’re such a girl it’s mortifying.” Lee conforms to male stereotypes because Jem is a boy he must be the dominant one. On the other hand she also conforms to feminine stereotypes by making Scout stay and making her afraid of the house. Finally, there is much evidence to suggest that the author does conform to not only male but feminine stereotypes.
True Bravery Atticus has taught me many things. One of the more important lessons was that of true bravery. I used to think bravery meant doing things you are scared to do (like approaching the Radley house), but I now realize that that was foolish. Atticus says true bravery means "when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" Mrs. Dubose, Atticus, and even Scout were able to show true bravery. Mrs. Dubose, of course, wanted to quit her morphine addiction, even though it would kill her.
Atticus is also a loving and caring father, Atticus hopes the best for his children, Jem and Scout. Not to mention Boo Radley, a recluse who never steps foot outside, he eventually comes out to rescue Jem and Scout. Atticus hopes his children; Jem and Scout will learn tolerance and appreciation for differences among people. Atticus never minces words when he advises
“It was wrong to open other people's letters, but it was right, it was essential, for her to know everything.” (144). She feels guilt for doing what she knows is wrong, but her desire to control all aspects of life, as if she were an author, leads her to feel that her actions are not only justified, but right. When Briony decides that Robbie was guilty of raping Lola, she wants no evidence to the contrary. Her thoughts are that, “Everything connected. It was her own discovery.
