Things Fall Apart Essay “Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness” (Pg.13) Things Fall Apart, written by Chinua Achebe, is a story about a man who's life is dominated by fear. Since his childhood he was ashamed of his father. His father shared a low reputation in the village because he never worked. “In his day he (Unoka) was lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow” (Pg.4). He soon acquired a high reputation and becomes three wife’s. His first wife, whose name was never mentioned, gave him his first son. He soon realized that his son, Nwoye, tended to be lazy and weak. He started beating him in order to make him strong and hard-working. He does this because he is scared to have a son who is similar to his own father, who wasn't capable of living a normal life. He also doesn't want other people to see him having a lazy son. It scares him because other people might reflect his sons behavior on him. He really tries to be exactly the opposite of his father. He mistook this behavior as masculinity. He also does not realize that people in the village dont really think its right, the way he treats his wife and children. His behaviour clearly shows that he actually has a really weak character. He wouldn't have to prove his strenght like that if he knew he had it. I think he actually hates the way he is but on the othere hand he is scared to become like his father. The life he lives probaly isnt to joyful but he just tries to provide for himself and his family. When Ikemefuma comes to the village we realize that Okonkwo relly likes him and is a friendly and helpful “father” towards Ikemefuma. This proves
