Troy’s relationship with his father was not as good as it could have been because his father seemed like he did not care about his children and that all he was worried about was “getting [the] bales of cotton” to his boss (Wilson, 852.) Troy’s father accepted his responsibility towards Troy and made sure he had what he needed to survive, but he did not treat him the way Troy thought he should have been treated. Because of the type of relationship he had with his father Troy ended up treating his children the same way since that was all he knew whether he wanted to admit it or not. Also his father was an evil man that nobody could stand. His father was so evil he ran off Troy’s mother when Troy was “about eight” (Wilson, 852).
In their village, having no title (as a male) means that you aren’t worthy or powerful. Understanding that Okonkwo was very afraid of failing, even more afraid of being like his father. Meaning having no power, or being worthy. The narrator tells us that Okonkwo, “...was ruled by one passion - to hate everything his father Unoka had loved. One of those things was gentleness and another was idleness.” (Achebe pg.13).
This resulted in him not being able to defend Hassan through his struggles. Amir’s past not only never allowed him to live happily in his present day, but the regrets of his sins dwelled him with grief for a very long time. With this said, it is only assumed that one’s past of sinful deeds can guide them into seeking change and forgiveness amongst themselves. Amir never accepted Hassan as a brother or as a son like figure to their father, Baba. During the course of the novel of ‘Deadly Unna?’ the readers are exposed to the negativity between the father and his son. This affects Blacky in way that his self-esteem is almost non-existent, and the negativity is prominent throughout the novel. Examples of the neglect shown by his father are that of the time when Bob refers to Blacky as a ‘gutless wonder’, and the journey we take through the story of Blacky’s deteriorating respect for him. The ‘gutless wonder’ incident was a influential part of the novel, as Blacky realises that his Dad isn’t one to take advice of someone he feels is inferior than him, thus saying, ‘My own son, a gutless wonder. A gutless fucking wonder!’ When Blacky explains to his father about the storm, Bob insults him rather than swallow his pride and takes his son’s advice on board.
Achebe described Okonkwo's father in this way: “Unoka (Okonkwo's father) …was lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow.” (Achebe 4) In contrasting that to the culture I have been brought up in, it seems that the majority of men who had a father like Unoka responded in living their life in trying to make up for what their father lacked in his – which is the same idea that I felt that Okonkwo's goals and ideas were based on. I say this because of how often he had to fight the urge to show affection or love to his children and wives, and also to his believing that if he told Nwoye stories of battle and destruction that Nwoye would become more of a man. I feel grateful that I have been raised in a family that the idea of showing affection is encouraged, and that there is nothing wrong with the feminist traits of women, and that it is ok for me to have them. I have been raised to always express yourself through words and emotion, and in some cases physically. If one of my five sisters or one of my 4 brothers did something nice for me I wouldn't just turn my shoulder and pretend like nothing happened or just stare at her/him with indifference, but I would
His father was very laid back and accomplished nothing in life and Okonkwo hated him for it. Okonkwo’s eldest son Nwoye is lazy and weak from an early age. Okonkwo’s fear of his father’s laziness rubbing off on his son Nwoye changes Okonkwo from hero to villain when he beats him to make himself more masculine. What he thinks is helping his family is actually causing pain. Okonkwo’s wives are often beaten for the simplest of things, sometimes even for not explaining to him where they have gone.
One of Martin’s main goals come from is humbling background of his parent’s lack of education and lack of material goods. He was ashamed by all of these as a child. Adler’s theory suggests that we are trying to move from the negative to positives regarding things such as family and lifestyle. Martins discuss of his unique lifestyle growing up may be a very strong motivator. Also, Adler’s theory example that ones feeling of inferiority pushes them to try and be more superior.

This meant that he had to be the opposite of what his father was; he couldn’t bare even being a hair alike. By this becoming his purpose Okonkwo lost many qualities, and moments of his life that made him become instead of respected; feared. Okonkwo had the inability to form any sort of relationship with his family, friends, and even including himself. “Okonkwo never showed any emotion openly, unless it is the emotion of anger. To show affection was a sign of weakness; the only thing worth demonstrating was strength” (pg 28).
He is disliked by his children especially the oldest son because he is hypocritical by doing the things he scolds them not to. The mother of the family (played by Jessica Chastain) is loved and adored by her sons. She teaches them to live freely and to enjoy the world around them. The parent’s contrasting views confuse the oldest son and make him resentful of the situation he is currently living in. The film is not so cut and dry as the previous plot summary makes it sees.
