As a description of United States foreign policy, the word originated in a report Kennan submitted to the U.S. defense secretary in 1947 This report was later used in a magazine article. As the perceived threat from the Soviet Union continued to grow, the West became desperate to stop the spread of communism. After WWII, the communist community grew quickly in many parts of Europe. England was desperately trying to stop the spread of European communism in key countries, one of which was Greece. A fear shared by the U.S. and Britain was that if Greece became communist, so would Turkey, and the Soviets would control the eastern Mediterranean.
U.S. 483, 491, 494–495 (1954) I chose Brown V. Board of Education. Facts: Multi similar cases joined into one under the name Brown before the United States Supreme Court on December 9, 1952. Children of black families sought aid in being able to attend the public schools of their community without segregation. In each case they had been denied entrance to the schools that were attended by white children. It is alleged that the segregation deprived the plaintiffs of equal protection of the laws under the Fourteenth Amendment.
Brown v. Board of Education During more than half a century black and white children were separated and didn’t go to the same school. Everything changed with the court decision of the case Brown v. Board of Education. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 1954, was a United States Supreme Court decision that declared that the state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. This decision overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson decision of 1896 which allowed the segregation. Released on May 17, 1954, the Warren Court's unanimous (9–0) decision stated that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."
Truman started at the bottom in terms of what strategy to take in this war. As mentioned in his speech, The Truman Doctrine, his plan of economic aid was to financially support Greece and Turkey to help them stop communism from expanding to other areas (Truman). Through his efforts in military aid, we became allies with Greece by helping them with their military (Truman). Truman created the United Nations to protect us from communism so communists had a bigger force to get through and keep communism out of the US as part of his military use.(Truman). Beginning in the 1950s, maintaining a non-Communist South Vietnam became crucial in American efforts to contain communism. What was the nation's justification for its actions in South Vietnam in the 1950s and its determination to abide by the outcome of free elections there only if those elections yielded a non-Communist leader? For a long time the United States were in fear of the threat of communism stemming from a direct attack and the aspect of the Cold War, played a vital role in the fears. Europeans started bringing African-Americans to America back in the mid -1500s. Two and a half centuries of slavery and segregation stop black men and women from exercising their rights. They were denied the right to vote and if they tried to vote they were either beaten or even killed for trying to do so. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), was formed in 1909. It’s sole purpose was to try to abolish segregation and discrimination in housing, education, employment, voting, and transportation and securing for African Americans their constitutional rights.
After the end of the Second World War the two war time allies THE USA and SU became involved in a war of ideologies the cold war. The US saw communism as a threat to democracy and capitalism. Therefore the US set out a new foreign policy that was of containment of communism in the Truman doctrine. There were however other reasons for the USA’s involvement such as their military confidence, UN agreement, domestic pressure which called for the T admin to be more tough on communism and their economic interest in Japan which led to the US governments decision to use military intervention in the K war. The main reason for the USA’s military intervention in the Korean war was that of containment.
Issues began to arise about whether or not transracial adoptions could hinder a childs development in any way (Bernards). In 1971 the National Association of Black Social workers referred to the adoption of black children by white parents “social genocide”. By the 1980s adoption agencies began giving preference to same-race adoptions (Bernards). Sadly the number of adoptions of African American children decreased by almost half. Finally in early 90s the Multi-ethnic placement act required adoption agencies to not determine adoption placement by race.
How effective were protest against segregation the USA in the 1950s and the 1960s and why? Before the Civil Rights Movement, whites discriminated against African Americans. Blacks were not allowed to attend the same school or go to the same churches even; public facilities and transport was separated for the two groups. Blacks were also kept from voting. Organisations like the NAACP, The National Association for the advancement of Colored People, was set up in 1909 and campaigned against the `Jim Crow` laws.
