She began to shut herself from her husband and most importantly, her son. The mother-son relationship has clearly died off. The lack of communication between Beth and Conrad affected Conrad in many ways. Beth’s cold attitude towards Conrad leads to his anger and how he wants to be left alone from everyone, including his father. Her parents never realized that after every meal Rachel would secretly go to the bathroom upstairs and throw up everything she had eaten. Her father would beat her up and treat her like trash and her mother would just stand there and not say a word because she was weak and always did as Rachel’s dad said. Also, her lack of intelligence has left her with no job and an inability to get a job. In the story, there are many reasons contributing to Jean’s feeling of emptiness and difficulty in her life. To begin, her husband, Ross feels as though he has married beneath himself, and he does not love her anymore. Their marriage was most likely caused by Jean getting pregnant with their son, which made Ross feel like he had to marry her out of force. In the story, Ross specifically tells their son, Kevin that he should try not to marry beneath himself because he will end up stuck in the same situation as him.
There’s the part in the book where one of the main characters George tells his friend Lennie not to speak and it ends up getting him into a fight and then when Lennie tells Curleys wife not to speak. The first reason why conflict is heightened when people are not permitted to speak is the part in the book when George and Lennie first move in and are settling down at the ranch. They're just minding their own business when Curley who’s the bosses’ son walks in. George has told Lennie not to speak because whenever Lennie speaks it always gets himself and/or George into trouble. By Lennie not speaking it really annoyed Curley and Curley thought Lennie was mucking him around so Curley got really angry at Lennie for not speaking and they ended up having a fight and they both got hurt.
Her father comes home late at night or gets lost and doesn’t come at all because of his drinking obsession. Her dad is regretful and is always promising change, but Sam can see through his hollow phony heart. Her mother repeatedly keeps believing her father and makes excuses for him, but Sam learns these words mean nothing and isolates herself from her father even more. She is constantly trying to protect her little brother named Luke from her dad because he doesn’t apprehend what is going on. She wants to reveal these secrets to someone, but she can’t tell her friends because she assumes that they will criticize her.

Despite having to be the caretaker of the family, mothers always try there very best to provide her children with what ever she can afford. This is ‘’all over but shout in’’ by Rick Bragg who express his feelings and describe the way he feels about being abandoned by his father.
