Throughout Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, cruelty surrounds the people from the inside and out. The characters begin the story as heart-welcoming souls, but as the story proceeds, cruelty forces the worst out of people. Macbeth demonstrates many attributes of a cruel man. His cruel mind leads him to be delirious as he murders his own king, Duncan. Sometimes, people need an object or attribute so badly they can bring out the worst of themselves. Macbeth says, “If chance will have me king, why chance may crown me without my stir” (1.3.142-143). As Macbeth is speaking these words, he does not believe cruelty will get him what he desires, but in the end, cruelty overtakes him. Lady Macbeth is power hungry; she desires wealth and fortune, so she manipulates the dubious Macbeth into a cruel, man-eating machine. Cruelty drives Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to do terrible deeds throughout the play. These acts of cruelty include the ambush of Banquo, the slaughtering of Lady Macduff and her children, and the poorly treated servants. The foul desire of being king leads Macbeth to take cruel action, no matter the circumstances “Fleance his son, that keeps him company/ Whose absence is no less material to me/ Than is his father’s, must embrace the fate/ Of that dark hour” (3.1.135-138). In other words, Macbeth does not take any chances of failing what he plans to do, even if family is by Banquo’s side.
