The Necklace Theme and Narrative Elements of The Necklace Tisha Smith Eng 125 The short story that I have chosen is The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. While reading this story I was enthralled with the detail in which the author described the ladies in the story. I could see them vividly in my mind. I feel the overall theme of this story is things aren’t always as they seem. The setting, character and plot had a big influence on the overall theme. While reading through the story the author went into great detail to help you visualize the setting in witch this lady was living. It helped me understand that she was depressed feeling like she didn’t have enough. On a daily basis she was envious of other ladies whom she knew that were doing well in life. Her husband was a hard worker and wanted her to have those things but nothing he did was quite enough. I enjoyed the part of the story where the husband came in with the tickets to the ball. I felt this is the main part of the story that showed the character of lady. She wasn’t grateful for the tickets he had brought her, she more worried about what she didn’t have, worried that the dress that she already own wasn’t good enough. He then gave her money to make a dress that was in her eyes good enough and she still wasn’t happy. She then borrowed the necklace which would cause her whole world to fall apart. She borrows what she feels is a very valuable necklace, enjoys herself at the dace with her husband. When she gets back home she realizes she doesn’t have the necklace. They end up working their lives away for ten years, to pay for a replacement necklace for her friend. After working those ten years she finds out that the necklace she borrowed was a fake that she could have bought for herself. My overall feeling about the story was that it was a well written story about a simpler time in life, But
