Companies from all over the state of Mississippi donate materials and tools and supplies for these homes can be built. Food is donated from different restaurants so the builders can eat lunches that I help serve. This is a great an amazing organization. On the weekends I walk to the site where they are building a home for a family.

Scary and dangerous was probably the only thoughts I’d ever had on the subject of homelessness. Then one day an old man sat on the side of the road in the rain changed everything for me. Charles was his name, and he liked my dog. He didn’t complain about being wet, but he also happily accepted the bright orange pop-up tent that I pulled out of our camping supplies and delivered to his street corner.

They would play under it, Amir would read stories for Hassan under it, he taught Hassan how to read and write under it and I think the last time they were under it was when Amir was throwing the pomegranates at Hassan so they left it on a bad note. That pomegranate tree was a place where Amir could be himself and not worry about what other people thought of him for hanging out with Hassan and therefore their relationship under that tree was a more real and intense. I think what he meant by the tree not having fruits for years was that their happiness under that tree gave it life and how Hassan wanted that relationship
