Children all over the world should know that not everything may be as it seems, but as long as they know how to work around the obstacles they can do anything. In Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, the story of a young girl named Kira is told. It is said that she grew up with her mother after her father was killed by the beasts, and every day there was a challenge she had to face. Kira was not like other children in the community; as a result, many people thought that she should be taken to the field to be eaten by the beasts. Kira was born with a twisted leg; therefore no one thought she would be a useful part of society since she would not be able to work like the others. However, her mother did not give up on her, she knew how important Kira would be in the future. After her mothers death Kira encounters numerous obstacle she must face alone in order to survive in a community that wanted her dead. During Kira’s journey Lowry finds ways to teach the audience through didacticism, the importance of friendship, self value, and children can offer more than some may think. Having the opportunity to make a friend is a big aspect of life that will help in any situation. Friendship was very important for Kira since she lived in a community that wanted nothing to do with her. Kira was alone now that her mother and father had both passed away, yet she managed to move forward with the help of a special friend, Matt. Matt was a boy from the Fen, a poor and run down village that was looked down upon because they were dirty and had no manners. Although Matt was from that type of community it seemed as if he had a better understanding of how people should be treated. He always looked out for Kira, whether it was telling her what he had heard from eavesdropping on someone else’s conversation, or saving a few of her things before they burned down her cott.
