“Maxine’s academic success is a stumbling block to her search for a place in America.” How far do you agree with this statement? Maxine’s search for an identity in America is an ardours process due to the difficulties of negotiating the demands of her Chinese and American culture which at times juxtaposes each other. She uses the knowledge she has acquired through her education to mediate the demands of her dual heritage. While initially her academic success results in her displacement in the Chinese household, it eventually becomes a mean for the matured Maxine to form a powerful voice to establish her presence in her family and America. Through her success academically, it gives her the confidence to establish a powerful voice which becomes the first step towards articulating a self and finding a presence in the American institution. Maxine’s education allows her to find a voice in America by increasing her proficiency in the English Language. Being equipped with a common language as the Americans enables her to speak up and it establishes her presence in the American society. Young Maxine’s incompetency in the English Language cripples her ability to voice out and this is tantamount to her lack of presence in class. This is exemplified “when [Maxine’s] second grade class did a play” and were “left behind in the classroom” as “her voice[] [was] too soft or nonexistent.” By linking “too soft” with “nonexistent”, it serves to suggest that Maxine’s inaudible voice results in the erasure of her presence in class. Furthermore, the imagery that is created by the teacher “lea[ving] [her] in the classroom” illustrates abandonment and that Maxine’s presence is forgotten. This further reinforces the idea that without a voice to establish herself in the institution, Maxine faces the risk of erasure in the American society. Also as a child, her silence is “thickest –
