Being born in China but living in America, she seems ashamed of her roots and that is why she is embarrassed when her mother speaks broken English (Tan 142-146). But, although she tries hard to be American speaking and writing good English, she realizes that she has deviated from her true self. She finally makes peace with her mother and she starts appreciating her “Mother Tongue”, which consequently affects her writing positively. This shows just how peoples’ native languages are important in their lives. Our “Mother Tongue” is what gives us identity; it defines who we are, and therefore, people should value their native languages.
This shows heroism because many others could not have had such power in these three traits. Heroism comes from responsibility of these traits, and is made up of the trait building blocks, which could only be found rarely in people. Anastasia is extraordinary because she pushed herself past her boundaries to adapt and fit in while studying rigorously to secure a bright future. Heroism is about pushing yourself to make a new you, and that is what Anastasia did as she transformed to a new American lady, well off in the US today, because of those struggling years of character and
The technical convention of close-up shots is used to show the importance of education through the facial expressions which show desperation, anger and joy of the families of children applying for charter schools. During the final scenes of the documentary, we learn that some children were accepted and some were not. This makes the reader sympathize with the children who were not accepted. The symbolic convention of body language is used to show the importance of education through Ruby’s actions in the isolated classroom. Welsh says the reasoning behind the emigrated student’s success is the self determination and motivation to do well in school, as well as hard work exerted by the students. I agree with Welsh’s argument and believe that students who emigrated from foreign countries to the United States see their learning opportunity as a privilege that they do not take for granted unlike most of us. The American student s who are born with the opportunity to learn in United States schools tend to take their education for granted. They see it more as a requirement rather than opportunity. Welsh’s article discusses the difference between American students and Asian students.

The janitor, who is the narrator of the story, observes all the obstacles that the school and students have faced over time.
Her doctor breaks the news to her without the least humane consideration of her emotions just like she used to treat her students. We see a clear example of lack of empathetic behavior when she tells one of her students “You can come to this class prepared or you can excuse yourself from this class, this department and this university. Do not think for a moment that I will tolerate
She states multiple times that the children within the education system are being cheated every day because they are not being forced to read more difficult books. “Such benefits are denied to the young reader exposed only to books with banal, simple-minded moral equations as well as to the student encouraged to come up with reductive, wrong-headed readings of mulitlayered texts” (Prose 97). The reader can blatantly see that Prose thinks negatively of the high school curriculum that today's students face. It seems clear that Prose does not want to hide her personal view or feelings, so she starts her essay out in a way that we do not have to read between the lines to get a sense of how she feels about what she is writing. She uses more emotional language when she says, "The intense loyalty adults harbor for books first encountered in youth is one probable reason for the otherwise baffling longevity of vintage mediocre novels, books that teachers may themselves have read in adolescence"(Prose
