Well, in New Mexico there is a high risk of drought but people keep thinking that there is a limitless amount of water. Despite how much rain fall New Mexico gets each year, millions of gallons of water are being used each day by corporations’ and the people. But when the time comes for people to start realizing the effects it has on the water system it might be too late. Well the U.S. Geological Survey released a report showing that Albuquerque was pumping out its ground water nearly three times faster than it could be replenished (174).…show more content…
New Mexico’s people use water to their advantage by expecting more to come. Understanding the difference between how the water retrieves itself proves that the amount of water being used is remarkably high. As Bruce Selcraig states “Albuquerque receives’ their water by an aquifer that led the public officials to believe it sat atop an underground Lake Superior but it was perpetually replenished underground by the Rio Grande (173)”. It had left the officials questioning about the amount of water that they thought was really there. Test showed the underground water basin had dropped by as much as 40 feet between 1989 and 1992 and nearly 140 feet in some places over the past three decades (174). Understanding how the water should be used is set upon to how well it will affect the state in their financial area. As Rio Rancho takes in Intel there is a hope for a better feature. Intel was brought into the city to provide jobs for the people and to help the city’s economy. Intel uses triple amount of water that is not so easy to replace. How much water they need and how much water there is will cause a dent in the water supply. If there is more water being used faster than it can replenish itself, the effect it has on the state is a negative result in reports from the amount of water being used. Therefore, the government understands that it is right to give as much water to them because Intel will help the state of New Mexico to provide jobs. As a result, Selcraig states “Intel now employs 4,000 people in Rio Rancho, plans to hire at least another 500 next year and says it creates as least two spin-off jobs in the surrounding economy for every one inside the sprawling plant (175)”. The essence of the government’s argument is that creating jobs for the city will help the economy. Therefore, Intel will help to replace the missing piece to create new jobs for the people. By making new jobs for the people will help create money but it will not create more
