Motivational strategies have come to the teachers and researchers’ attention only recently. In the second language classroom, it is very unlikely to see that everyone is highly motivated to learn the target language, even the generally motivated learners may not be continuously displaying high enthusiasm and commitment. Therefore, the L2 teachers are eager to find ways to motivate those “unmotivated” ( Wilson, 2012). In response to this, this article looks into some motivational strategies to encourage learners’ motivation. Teachers can help learners by identifying learner problems and applying appropriate motivational strategies. However, there are also some precautions teachers need to take when using motivational strategies. This essay argues that using motivational strategies effectively can build up learners’ confidence and improve their overall performance in the second language learning, thus, in the long run, achieving the ultimate goal of learners’ self-motivation. This essay is developed in three parts: first of all, it points out the prerequisites that need to be met before adopting motivational strategies, and then it suggests some effective motivational strategies for teachers to adopt in the classroom. In addition, some points that teachers need to consider when carrying out these strategies are also discussed here.
