Arizona Hunt – Kirtland Mrs. Heywood Period 1 7 November 2011 The Unfair Trial of Tom Robinson Could you imagine walking into a courtroom with your freedom, happiness and life all on the line knowing that you have no chance of walking out being charged as not guilty? Imagine walking into the courtroom knowing you are about to be told that your life is going to be taken away for something you did not even do? That is how Tom Robinson felt. The justice system is set up to make sure that free men are let free and guilty mean are locked up where they belong but that only works when a person is given a fair trial. Tom Robinson was not given the chance to be set free because he was not given a fair trial. With a biased jury, racist community and lack of evidence Tom Robinson never stood a chance in that trial. Tom Robinson was a hard-working black man who had never done anything but help Ewell’s though when put into a court room he was the odd man out. He may work just as hard or be just as friendly as the other men in the room but he was black which set him apart from them. The jury was made up of white men and white men only. There were no black men in the jury. This made the jury not fair. Seeing as every man on the jury was white they were biased. They would first help the man of their own skin color than help someone who is different than every one of them. When the decision on whether or not he was guilty was being made up by a biased jury he was sure to be charged as guilty. Racism plays a huge role in the fairness of this trial. Majority of the town wanted Tom Robinson to be found guilty simply because of the color of his skin even if they had never met him. With a judge and jury and audience all watching and participating in the trial with the mindset that he is worse than them just because of his skin if unfair. He should have been treated the same a
