As a young soldier in the United States Army, I volunteered and met the requirements to attend the United States Army Advanced Airborne School. It was self learning from the beginning. To qualify I had to teach myself the following by self learning discipline. I had to learn on my own the following items through building and studying to reach my goals. Prior to attending the course I purchased the books required and began a structured daily pattern of learning the general information.
The art of Literary Criticism What do you do when your dreams are cut short? Most people would give up all hope, and disregard the dream they once had, but others such as Tom Clancy find an alternate route to success. Clancy planned to join the military after college, but due to his poor eyesight he failed the ROTC exam, and was unable to join the program. Although Clancy was not accepted into ROTC, he continued researching various aspects of the military and decided to write a book including all the military information he learned about. This book was named The Hunt for the Red October, and immediately became a success, reaching number one on The New York Times Bestseller (Armstrong, 84).
He doesn’t notice how fast he runs, but is discovered by a group of college football coaches that are willing to give him a full scholarship if he plays on their team. Although his mental handicap, he is given the opportunity to obtain a college degree. After college, Forrest chooses to join the military, spending years in Vietnam fighting. While fighting, his battalion meets a situation with gunfire and grenades all exploding all around them. Using his ability to run, he ran and ran until he carried members into safety.
Welty said, “Neither of my parents had come from homes that could afford to buy many books, but though it must have been something of a strain on his salary, as the youngest officer in a young insurance company, my father was all the while carefully selecting and ordering away for what he and Mother though we children should grow up with.”(Welty, 391) I remember my father giving me his old Hardy Boys books when I was about eight years old. His words are still in my head,“These were my favorite books as a kid and I want you to enjoy them as I did when I was seven. These books kept me out of trouble,” he laughed. At first I was not really into the Hardy Boys, but since my father loved them I wanted to enjoy them like he did. “My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well.”(Alexie, 397) Parents want their children to succeed in life and they know without literacy the world would be a tough place.
My college-prep science class used the same book that my sixth grade class used three years priors. Furthermore, many of the teachers were there only because they didn't know what else to do and probably couldn't hold down a real job. I remember the teacher for our "Guidance Class", telling us that he became a teacher because he wasn't smart enough to be an engineer. Apparently he wasn't smart enough to think of any other alternatives either. That was great career advice, thanks a bunch!
For instance, when Bubba, Forests best friend, sacrificed his life in the Vietnam War and never gets a chance to follow his dream to be a shrimp boat captain. Then Lt. Dan loosing his legs while at combat and Forest saving his life. This makes Lt. Dan very angry and holds a grudge on Forest because he said it was his destiny to have died and not to be saved. Through the entire movie he is motivated by Jenny and loves her very much. Then years after they stop talking and lose contact she writes a letter to ask him to visit.
After attending four years of college and two years of graduate school, she still felt her father viewed her education as a waste because she had not married. Still, she continued to write. Finally one of her articles was translated into Spanish. It was then that her father sat down and gave her the recognition she had wanted so badly. I have always felt that I have fallen short of my families expectations, but this does not hold me back, I continue to strive to be the person I want to become.
