The citizens of the United States of America probably wouldn’t have their rights today, if soldiers hadn’t fought for America. Soldiers risked their lives and left their families by going to other countries. Everyone who fought or is still fighting for America is a military hero because they are a very important part of American history. Americans need to always honor their military heroes. People aren’t forced to join the armed forces; they volunteer.
MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart did not give up after the first time the commander said not to go to the crash site; they keep asking the commander for permission until the commander granted their request. MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart deserved the Medal of Honor for having the strength to show their braveness, confronting their fear in the courageous act of going beyond the call of duty and giving their lives to save
O’Brien uses this to his advantage to give the reader a true sense of what the experience in Vietnam was for the common soldier, while at the same time not describing it outright, which is something he says later in the story cannot be done in simple words. In one of the passages early on in the story a list that demonstrates this point is clearly written, “Henry Dobbins, who
Captain Miller is portrayed as a very heroic figure; his only priority is to complete his mission as a soldier, which in this case was to rescue Private Ryan. Captain Miller was also very honorable when he has a prisoner that killed one of his soldiers, he decided to obey the rules of engagement and he let the soldier go. This scene turns out to be ironic because the same soldier comes back to shoot and kill Captain Miller. Even though Captain Miller was killed he achieved his mission and Private Ryan was saved. Actor Tom Hanks did an outstanding job playing this character and really made it seem like a documentary rather than a historical fiction.
The cold truth, being that the loved ones back home are left broken hearted, as they are told that Father, Brother or Son have been killed at War, serving for their Country. They gave their lives for the people back home... but what for? I do see the honour in fighting for something you believe in, and being ready to make a difference. It is just I simply do not see the honour in a violent battle that leaves many dead, injured and mentally tortured. The soldiers become puppets, and it is someone back home in their warm and comfortable house, pulling the strings.
Anthem For Doomed Youth is a sonnet written by Wilfred Owen about the realities of war. Wilfred Owen was a soldier during WW1 and therefore understands fully the true experiences of war. He was against war and was appalled by the effects of war on people and their families. The purpose of the poem is to inform the public of the true realities of war and how young men where dying needlessly. This was because during war times the media would tell the public that the war going great and that the men where doing just fine, but this obviously just wasn’t true.
Me and my classmates were fed all those great examples of people fighting during Second World War sacrificing their lives and not even dare to look for any kind of reward other then admitting them into “hero ranks” of their “great” country. Fighting for reward was not hero like behavior. I realize though that this understanding of hero was more due to the norms and obligations of certain time and society. In “The Iliad” hero is noted for his courage and strength and desire to fight especially if they risk their life or put it in any kind of danger. But at the same time Homer also pays great attention to rewards, heroes get for their fighting.
Jake handles the war injury as well as anyone could. “What’s the matter with you anyway?” “I got hurt in the war”(24) Even though he turns to alcohol and feels lonely every once in a while he passes that by confiding in new friends and making memories with the old ones as well. Brett Ashley was another character impacted by the war. Her husband had died in battle and it was extremely tough to get through. “During the war.
Okonkwo was scared of people thinking he was just like his father so he worked hard since he was a child. This made him hate everything his father was made of, which is weakness and being lazy. ”Even as a little boy he had resented his father’s failure and weakness”. (13). when Okonkwo father died he had been in a lot of debt, Okonkwo became obsessed with the idea of manliness in order to get over his father weakness.
Their way of living should not be respected, but it is true that each of them is somehow struggling with their lives The antagonist and narrator of the story, Jake Barnes, experienced World War I as a soldier.
