In both books, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and A Separate Peace by John Knowles, friendship is primarly the theme. There was Goerge and Lennie an odd pair who shared a common dream. "' A guy needs somebody-to be near him.' He whined, ' A guys goes nuts if he ain't got nobody.'"(Steinbeck 72). Then there was Gene and Phineas, friends attracked by eachothers differences and bound by trust. "'Naturally I don't believe books and I don't believe teachers,' he came across a few paces, ' but I do believe-it's important after all me to believe you. Christ, I've got to believe you, at least. I know you better than anyone.'"(Knowles 163). The overall message from both books can be seen through characters actions and thoughts by the different styles and techniques our authors used based on friendship.…show more content…
Gene and Goerge are left to grieve their best friends death. "I did not cry then or ever abaout Finny. I did not cry even when I stood watching him being lowered down into his family's strait-laced burial ground outside of Boston. Icould not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case." When Phineas passed away, Gene not only lost his best friend, but he lost a piece of himeslf as well. George on the other had to make a very difficult decision: letting Curely shoot Lennie, or do it himself. "And George raised the gun and steadied it and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger."(Stenbeck 106). And it was there he Rendon 3 made the toughest decision, to send his best friend off, not by a stranger but by someonewho loved him. Through tradegy, differences, and mistakes,two friends contined to push past and keep their relationship strong.
