Animal Lovers The subculture of animal lovers is people who care about the well-being of animals and love animals as they do humans. Although this is the central belief of animal lovers there are two types to this subculture. People who are activist and fight for the rights of animal such as organizations like: PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and IDA (In Defense of Animals. And people who just love their pet animals. Either way, both types are still in love with animals making them animal lovers. The morals and beliefs of animal lovers aren’t any new principles; in fact there were people as far back as the 1700’s who were known animal rights activists. The first known law for animal rights dates back to 1635 when Richard Ryder wrote a law prohibiting the pulling of wool off of sheep and the attachment of ploughs to the tails of horses. The first animal rights group was formed in the 1960’s and was named the Oxford group. The people of this group were mainly from the University of Oxford and began to view the use of animals as unacceptable exploitation. As the years went by animals were used more and more in experiments and tests which caused more people to stand up for them forming the subculture of animal lovers. PETA is one of the biggest and most powerful organizations in the fight for animal rights with nearly two million members and supporters. It was formed by Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco on March 1980, and its slogan is “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.” When I think of an animal lover the first thing that pops into my head is PETA. This organization symbolizes everything that an animal lover believes in and contains most of the subculture in its numbers.
