Persis Yeung Essay 2010/10/23 Essay: The song Numb by Linkin Park Numb is a song sang and written by Linkin Park. It is one of the most well known and popular tracks of Linkin Park. The lyric of this song is short, written in 1st person, expresses an emotion and is not story-telling. This is a lyric poem that uses poetic strategies such as figurative language and sound effects. It also has an in-depth meaning. Firstly, this song’s lyric uses poetic strategy. The poetic strategy used is figurative language, such as hyperbole and idiom. An example of hyperbole is “feeling so faithless loss under the surface.” The person can’t actually be so faithless until he is loss under the surface. This is just an exaggeration. An example of idiom is “put under the pressure of walking in your shoes.” The person can’t actually be “put under the pressure”. He also doesn’t mean literally to walk in the other person’s shoe. He is figuratively saying that he has to think of how the other person feels. Another example of idiom is “caught in the undertow”, he isn’t actually caught by the undertow.
