To escape the poverty of Africa, her parents entrusted her to her great aunt who brought her to Europe. Victoria was tortured to death by that great-aunt, Marie Therese Kouao, and the woman's boyfriend Carl Manning. But Victoria need not have died. Police, doctors, social workers all had contact with her while she was being abused | Carl Manning said that Kouao would strike Victoria on a daily basis with a shoe, a coat hanger and a wooden cooking spoon and would strike her on her toes with a hammer. Victoria spent much of her last days, in the winter of 1999–2000, living and sleeping in a bath in an unheated bathroom, bound hand and foot inside a bin bag, lying in her own urine and faeces.

Although Anja Spiegelman, Vladek's late wife and Art's mother, survived Auschwitz and moved to America, she never emotionally escaped the terror of the Holocaust. Art reveals her unfortunate fate during the prologue of Maus on page 13 when he is describing his father's appearance. “He had aged a lot since I saw him last. My mother’s suicide and his two heart attacks had taken their toll” (Speigelman 13). Having this fact introduced at the very beginning of the book sets the eerie mood of false hope that the Holocaust entails – it shows us that Anja left Auschwitz physically alive, but emotionally broken.
By 1940, they were trapped in Amsterdam by the German occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the family went into hiding in the hidden rooms of Anne’s father’s office building. Two years later, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. Anne and her sister, Margot, were eventually transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they both died of typhus in March 1945. On her thirteenth birthday, Anne Frank received a diary and began documenting from that moment on.

Anja is the mother of Art and the Wife of Vladek. Being a fragile character right from the beginning, when Anja was in the Holocaust, she became increasingly ill, both physically and emotionally. Hence, even if Anja survived through all the insanity in the concentration camps, the depressions and breakdowns might have made her commit suicide. In Maus I, Spiegelman showed the reader that Vladek and Anja already developed a strong bond and this was evident throughout their time together in World War II. The couple hid in a cellar house where there was no food, Vladek said “Here Anja, chew on this.
