The Secret Meeting - Short Story

Michael Roberts is pacing in his loft, brows furrowed. He is wearing a specially tailored suit that he wears on Mondays and Wednesdays to work; matte black cufflinks, an off-white dress shirt and a red tie from an old lover. White hair is amongst his jet-black curls from worry and his face pale due to his lack of sleep. “Mr. Roberts, the car is waiting downstairs,” says his butler. “Tell it to wait Willem, can’t you see I’m busy?” Michael says sternly. He picks up his phone and calls his attorney. “Steve, I need a consult regarding the Ananke Donoghue case. Can you meet me at Vecna’s Apartment in twenty minutes?” Vecna, meaning the whispered one, is the place where Michael has his secret meetings; if it were ever to be investigated, it wouldn’t lead back to him. The building is leased under an H. S. Richmond, who died in 2010. Michael stumbled upon the building while scouting for property and saw that this particular room had been deserted. So he sought it as his own. Michael walks briskly down to the car and tells the driver the address of a bar. “I need to make a quick stop at the office first.” He makes another call this time to the number on the letter. It rings but there is no answer. When they arrive at the office, he goes straight up to his floor. He greets his assistant, Valenka, and goes into the file cabinet, he reaches for his key but he can’t find it. It is usually around his neck at all times. About to enter a state of tremendous panic he tells himself not to make a scene. He mustn’t make Valenka suspicious. There is another one in the drawer. When he opens the cabinet and looks for the one called Ananke. He searches through all the files starting with D, and even goes on to look in the E section just incase it was accidentally put there, but had found nothing. Someone had stolen it. Michael pretends to walk into the bar while the car is turning
