The human spirit never fails to disappoint each other. Whether it may be a storm, earthquake, or war, the human spirit of US Filipinos never wither away with the destruction. For example, remember when Typhoon Ondoy hit us? Well, despite the devastating floods and burying mud, people still had the courage to smile, laugh and make a joke out of the circumstances. This only goes to show that, we humans never frown. In Korea, old ladies there or “ajumoni” often bring forth big smiles, despite of their back breaking sea work. Oftentimes, after their work, the “ajumoni’s” gather around some hot porridge and freshly skewered “haemul” or seafood. They sing songs about their work and laugh about their experiences out at sea. That is one example of the resiliency of humans. Next, in Australia, being voted FOURTH in the Happiest Countries in the World List, they have their claim to fame. And, that is have big smiles on their faces, even when greeting tourists. In Japan, old-timers get their fix of health by smiling and being happy towards others. Remember the Fukushima Radiation Spill and the Japan Tsunami’s? Despite these disasters, the old people there still stayed happy and positive throughout their recovery, still having high hopes of recovering fully from their despair. And finally, here in the Philippines, we Filipinos still have this happy side to us, even if we experience these trying times. As an American tourist once put it, “Filipinos seem to make a joke out of every challenge they face and still manage to recover and succeed every time!” We Filipinos are much more capable of handling challenges with big smiles on our faces. Yet, even if we still manage to squeeze in some humor in every trial that we face, we still never forget the saving power of God himself. Why? Maybe because, He is the one supplying each and every one of us with these smiles. Humor is
