The relationship between the white woman and her Chinese husband In the Sui Sin Far’s Story “ The Story of One White Woman Who Married a Chinese”, it describes a white woman who got divorced with her husband, and remarried a Chinese guy with a baby. The reasons why she married Liu kanghi, a Chinese are “ well, in the first place because I loved him; in the second place, because I was weary of working, struggling and fighting with the world; in the third place, because my child needed a home.” (Sui Sin Far 67)So to her, the Chinese husband is not only just a husband under the legal definition of law, but also a friend, a lover and a life saver of her, but also the father of her child. However, in the deeper sense, it is the assimilation of the Asia, American culture. In the first place, Liu Kanghi to her is a live safer, because his appearance turned her miserable life upside down. At first, she married an American James, who is fifteen years older than her. She thought she found a soul mate in the first place-“It was a pleasure to me to wait up James, cook him nice little diners, read to him little pieces from the paper, and for a few months he seemed to be perfectly contented”. (Sui Sin Far 67) However, after six months of their marriage, she started to find out he didn’t respect her as a intelligent woman but rather like a nanny just built for taking care of kids. He even made her feel disgrace to be a woman and a mother. (Sui Sin Far 68) They finally divorced after she found out that he showed his interest to a bookkeeper Miss Moran. She left with a broken heart and a baby in the arms. As she was walking desperately to the waterfront, she met Liu Kanghi. Liu picked up the baby shoes that she dropped and told her that if she kept walking further, she will fall into the water, so she stopped and he offered to hold the baby.
