The Routed Influence Behind Edgar Allan Poe’s Writing Edgar Allan Poe, considered by many a literary genius who’s crafted poetic tragedies, of horrific tales, consumed with death, suffering and horror, are only humbled by the experiences and misfortune that Poe has lived through from an early age. His life, full of depression, angst, and sorrow, caused by the death of those closest to him, which fell victim to deadly plagues and diseases. To cope, Edgar sought comfort only to the bottom of a bottle, which some claim only further influenced his writings as it deepened his sorrow. Possibly the most significant use of personification instituted in "The Raven" comes from the communication between a raven and the speaker. He, the speaker, is mourning the loss of his love, Lenore. The raven, black in color, signifying death and grief, serves as a never-ending remembrance of the loss of his love Lenore. Throughout the raven's presence, the speaker is asking where Lenore is and if he will see her again. Again and again, the bird replies monotonously, "Nevermore". Although many have successfully written horror stories or tragedy poems, all agree that to create a piece of literature that completely encases the reader in an emotional and sympathetic bliss, is something only few others aside from Poe have managed to convey. The literary techniques of setting, diction, and personification, which Poe manipulates so well in “The Raven”, are put together to create a room exuding melancholy, despair, and fright for the reader.
