Not only does overcrowding leave a lack of proper health care for all inmates, but also leaves unsanitary conditions in the prison. Richard Seiter states, “Inmates often complain about overcrowding and poor overall conditions of confinement (poor food, lack of satisfactory health care, unsanitary conditions) that can result from overcrowding or from simple neglect by prison officials” (p.463). Overcrowding leads to the sewers becoming overloaded. When the prison sewers and wastewater systems can result in the discharge of waste past the maximum capacity. This would result in sewage spills and environmental contamination.

We see on the news of this happening in other countries but many Americans do not realize this is happening in our country as well, right under our noses. Some of the most unimaginable things take place in prisons not too far from where we live. Everyday, inmates undergo a variance of different forms of abuse. According to www.hrw.org, some forms of abuse are being beaten with fists and batons, stomped on, kicked, shot, stunned with electronic devices, doused with chemical sprays, choked, and slammed face first onto concrete floors by the officers whose job it is to guard them.
Throughout history we have seen that racism is a problem in the United States. From people being segregated to being discriminated because of their race, racism has affected many people. Because racism was a much bigger problem in the past, people tend to think that it doesn’t exist anymore. I think that racism is still a problem in the United States because it negatively impacts schools, neighborhoods, and society.
